They are bookmatched, such that the pieces of wood are mirror images of each other. These are rough cut and are not stabilized. In general, Black Walnut is a sufficiently hard wood that it does not need stabilization. The wood has been air dried to 10 12% moisture content.

It is entirely a light pinkish-brown heartwood with a very pleasing grain pattern

The color is the strong golden-yellow of fresh-cut Bodark heartwood with a very light shading of reddish spalting (both photos)

It is 90% the deep reddish-purple heartwood with a smoothly linear to gently curving grain pattern

It does have a during-growth crack that is brown-black with age -- these are often from windstorms during growth
